Active Student

Meta-Patterns

Pattern Name

ACTIVE STUDENT (Eckstein, Bergin, Sharp, & Manns, 2002b, p. 1)

Pattern Language

Patterns for Active Learning

Category

This pattern is a meta-pattern. It helps to establish a learning environment, where formative feedback and assessment can emerge.

Active Role

The pattern was originally written for teachers, could also be used by students if the pattern was adapted accordingly.

Summary

As learning is an individual construction process, passive students do not learn as much as active students. The INVISIBLE TEACHER wants to maximise student learning and therefore keeps students active in class, which is a TRUSTED SPACE (Eckstein et al., 2002b, p. 1).

Example for Technological Support

The ePortfolio-approach (STUDENT ONLINE PORTFOLIOS) supports students to be active as it is student-centred and belongs to the student, not the teacher.
